Universal Melody

Beneath the weeping
willows at night,
squeezing the cold
steel of a beer can
as the rain
chucks down heavily,
a universal melody,
the remedy for every
war lies here,
beneath the leaves
beside the beer,
all water is holy water,
trillions of spirits rising
up from all oceans
and reappearing as
fresh tears in the sky
falling from the grey
and bushy eyebrows of
old man god,
giving life to the vast
green forests,
every insect crawling,
every fish in every sea,
every mammal that
roams the land and
us the apes who kill
each other and rape
the planet,
how foolish we’ve
become by
disconnecting ourselves
from this,
the willow tree that
shelters me,
the rain that feeds
these mournful leaves,
squeezing the cold
steel of a beer can,
I know I must return
to the city where
everyone forgets
what we are,
just another thing
with legs
in the rain.
