Avenida Liberdade

avenida-liberdade
Window shopping
and people watching,
observing the classy
and sophisticated divas
on Avenida,
girls with bad attitudes
uttering platitudes,
green leaves blowing,
a sweet breeze flowing
for the unaffected elitist tribes
of the otherwise
hard-hitting economic crisis.
To us they’re not rational,
non-national, furthermore,
international money mavericks
showing absolutely no gratitude
to the average dude.
Walking to Avenida Liberdade
from Intendente is like
jumping with a parachute
from high cliffs of poverty
into a rich man’s avenue
barricaded in by the concrete parapets
of five star hotels
and designer clothing stores
with price tags dropping jaws
even quicker than the thickest idiots
on Jersey shores.
Avenida Liberdade is not from Portugal
it’s from abroad,
you can find this type of fraud in any land
among the likes of London, Paris and Milan.
It’s never where I stand
but sometimes where I sit
to have a sip of something subtle
and behave as if I’m rich
cos this evening I’m returning
to the nitty gritty backstreets
of the old authentic Portuguese,
only round the corner
but a million miles from this retreat.
